Game About Artificial Intelligence in Education for 'Data Lesson' Project

TASK
Create Simulator for School Students to Explain AI in Interactive Game Format
‘Data Lesson' is a project that helps Russian young students understand new technologies through educational lessons from leading IT companies. A key part of the lesson is a game simulator. The web portal has lessons about artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, game development and mobile applications.

We were contacted by ‘Contribution to the Future' Charitable Foundation and were asked to help in developing a game about artificial intelligence in education. We needed to explain how AI can help teachers — using examples of the most common tasks in a regular school.
SOLUTION
Storyline about AI as Gift for Mathematics Teacher
The basis for the storyline was suggested by colleagues from ‘Contribution to the Future' foundation as they have a better understanding of the target audience and the aims of the 'Data Lesson' project. We refined the nuances, packed the story into a comic book format and wrote specific dialogues.
The Data Lesson’s mascots live through the entire cycle of AI creation. Through the story in the comics, students learn how it works in reality.
Logic of the Simulator, Designed Mini-games and Screen-by-Screen Outline
Mini-games are the backbone of the educational process. Through them, students learn how artificial intelligence is created and works. Their mechanics were developed primarily. After that, we considered the plot seagues, intermediate and final result screens.

A separate task was to make three difficulty levels for different age categories. To speed up development, the mechanics remained almost the same, changing only the content, so everyone deals with mathematics adapted to the school curriculum. Something we have changed: for children in 1−4 grades we explain their mistakes and help them correct them, while 5−11 grades find out about the mistakes only at the end of the simulator.
The mini-games in the simulator alternate in difficulty, but are generally can be handled by any student.
Simulator Identity Based on Design System of ‘Data Lesson' Portal
For each minigame, we designed the UX interface and UI elements in an animated ‘digital' style to enhance the feeling of working with artificial intelligence. Our partners from Tetraform Design Studio took care of all the design.
The design system was based on ‘digital' blue and frames with different color accents.
RESULTS
3.5 million simulator playthroughs
The interactive simulator has become one of the most popular on the ‘Data Lesson’ portal. School students all over Russia explore the simulator during their mathematics and computer science lessons.
